Sustainable Tourism 2016, the seventh international conference on sustainable tourism, is to be held from May 18th to 20th in Valencia. The conference is organized by renowned British Wessex Institute of Technology.

So far, the conference was held in Segovia (2004), Bologna (2006), Malta (2008), New Forest (2010), La Coruna (2012) and Opatija (2014).

Tourism ceased to be the privilege of a few long time ago, and it took a very important place in the development of economy, knowledge, education and human welfare and lifestyle. Nowadays tourism significantly contributes to the new forms of economic development. Our knowledge of the world now includes a strong component due to tourism, since it introduces different cultures, customs and impressions we take from a journey.

Nevertheless, it led to certain problems regarding ecological changes and social costs. Many destinations oriented their entire economies towards tourism, so they could increase their incomes. That resulted with negative impact on the destination, its culture and identity.

Natural ecosystems became true rarity. Scientists more and more talk about \u201csocial ecosystems\u201d, and that is rather challenging for tourism and ecology. Ecology is deeply influenced by technology and development of society. Cities are rapidly changing which leads to the industry development. Opposite to that, rural environments are being abandoned.

Tourism has great impact on these problems and has to be able to meet the challenges of the \u201cnew age\u201d.

Goal of the conference on sustainable tourism is to find ways to protect natural and cultural landmarks. Also, great deal of attention is paid to the development of new solutions and capabilities to reduce the negative effects of tourism. For strategies and goals to become sustainable, entire society has to become more involved in these projects.

Some of the main topics covered are: ecological problems, climate changes, ecotourism, destination management, eTourism. Also, topics included and sport tourism, tourism and technology, medical tourism, city tourism, rural tourism, industrial tourism, heritage tourism, tourism development impact, marine tourism, etc.

The essential element for World Heritage\u00a0sites is Outstanding Universal\u00a0Value (OUV), meaning that the site\u00a0must\u00a0be important for the whole of\u00a0humanity,\u00a0not just the country on\u00a0whose\u00a0territory it is located.

There are ten criteria, characteristic\u00a0of cultural or natural sites, and for\u00a0each site, at least one of these must\u00a0be met (for example, to be a masterpiece\u00a0of creative human genius; or\u00a0to contain superlative natural phenomena).

2. What are the main activities organized\u00a0by UNESCO regarding the sites?

\n

The most important goal of the World\u00a0Heritage Convention is the preservation\u00a0of sites.\u00a0The 21-member World Heritage Committee,\u00a0made up of countries who\u00a0have ratified the World Heritage Convention,\u00a0meets once a year to review\u00a0the state of conservation of sites,\u00a0add new sites to the World Heritage\u00a0List, or add sites to the List of World\u00a0Heritage in Danger, if needed.

3. In your opinion, how these sites contribute\u00a0to the tourist image of countries?

It has been found that tourism can increase\u00a0significantly once a site is inscribed\u00a0on the World Heritage List.

This raises awareness of the importance\u00a0of the site, and of the need to\u00a0preserve it. And of course, tourists hopefully learn\u00a0to enjoy visiting sites without damaging\u00a0them.

Sustainable tourism focuses on preserving\u00a0sites while involving and empowering\u00a0local communities.

4. Could you name one or few Heritage\u00a0sites most visited in the world?

This is difficult to say, as there are\u00a0now 1,031 sites around the world,\u00a0802 cultural, 197 natural, and 32 mixed\u00a0(both cultural and natural) in 163\u00a0countries.

We encourage everyone to learn\u00a0about them, and it is likely that there\u00a0is a World Heritage site near you.
\nEven if one does not get to visit all sites,\u00a0our common goal is to help preserve\u00a0them through raising awareness\u00a0and international solidarity.
