One of the most prestigious and respected world cinema festivals, Festival de\u00a0Cannes 2015, takes place this year for the 68th time.

The festival will be held from\u00a013th to 24th May, and the main selection of the competition will include 19 films,\u00a0and the festival will open film \u201cStanding Tall\u201c, directed by Emmanuelle Bercot.

This year, the festival line-up will include\u00a0two Serbian films, Panama by\u00a0Pavle Vuckovic and Zvizdan, coproduced\u00a0by filmmakers from Croatia, Slovenia,\u00a0and Serbia.\u00a0The host of the opening and award\u00a0ceremonies at the Festival de Cannes,\u00a0like last year, will be French actor\u00a0and singer Lambert Wilson.

The festival receives more than 1,500\u00a0film applications a year, but only a\u00a0few of them get the chance to be presented\u00a0and participate in the prestigious\u00a0awards competitions.
\nThe Festival de Cannes will be held at\u00a0Palais des Festivals. Palais des Festivals\u00a0was built in 1949 specially for\u00a0festival\u00a0purposes where today JW\u00a0Marriott\u00a0Cannes stands, however as\u00a0the festival grew, a new palace was\u00a0erected in the eighties that still held\u00a0today.

The history of the Festival de Cannes\u00a0begins in 1930s, at a time when great\u00a0rivalry was instigated among the\u00a0French against the festival in Venice,\u00a0because the opinion was that Germany\u00a0and Italy were given advantage\u00a0and that only artists from these\u00a0countries were winning awards.

Cannes Film Festival is celebrating\u00a0120 years since the\u00a0Lumiere brothers invented\u00a0the cinematography motion\u00a0picture camera, which is\u00a0considered to be the very beginning\u00a0of the film industry.

In 1938, Minister of National Education\u00a0and Fine Arts Jean Zey started\u00a0the initiative to establish a cultural\u00a0event in France that would compete\u00a0with the festival in Venice.

The French government, after pressures\u00a0coming from different sides,\u00a0agreed to Zey\u2019s idea to establish the\u00a0International Cinema Festival, whose\u00a0opening ceremony was planned\u00a0for 1st September, 1939, in Cannes.\u00a0However, only one day after the festival\u00a0opening ceremony the Second\u00a0World War started. In 1946, the festival\u00a0was revived.

In its first years, the festival was being\u00a0held in September, due to rivalry\u00a0with the Venetian festival that also\u00a0ran that month, but in 1952 the festival\u00a0dates were changed to May, a\u00a0tradition that continues to this day.

The festival line-up that is going to be\u00a0shown within the Festival de Cannes\u00a0selections, as well as the selection of\u00a0those that will win awards, is entrusted\u00a0with the festival jury, appointed\u00a0by the Festival de Cannes Board of\u00a0Directors every year. For film industry\u00a0experts who earn a place in the\u00a0jury – and especially for the jury president\u00a0– this represents a particular\u00a0honour and matter of prestige.
