In the past few years we\u2019ve observed trends that, even though they eventually led to innovation, were essentially disruptive and extremely challenging, so coming into 2020 we\u2019re focusing \u2018on the bright side of life\u201d says Carina Bauer, CEO of the IMEX Group.</h1>\n<p>This shift towards the positive has been inspired by the creativity and resilience of individuals and companies in our industry and, in the wider world. So, IMEX has chosen to highlight trends which they believe are going to change the world, our industry and the way we work for the better in 2020.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-1-24.jpg\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-38133\" src=\"https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-1-24.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-1-24.jpg 800w, https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-1-24-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-1-24-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-1-24-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-1-24-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-1-24-696x522.jpg 696w, https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-1-24-560x420.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" /></a></p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>The circular economy</strong></span></p>\n<p>As an alternative to a traditional linear economy (make, use, dispose), in a circular economy we keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract the maximum value from them whilst in use, then recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of each service life. \u02baSustainability consciousness\u02ba has contributed enormously to changing attitudes and behaviours for the better \u2013 stopping practices like single use plastics that harm the planet and its inhabitants; to reducing waste and encouraging recycling. The next positive step is to create business models based on the circular economy in which the principles of zero waste, maximising product life and the reuse and recycling of materials are intrinsic to their design.</p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Taking up the challenge of the United Nations sustainable development goals</span> </strong></p>\n<p>\u201cProducing sustainable events is the only way to ensure that your business will continue to exist. It\u2019s not an addition \u2013 it\u2019s the only option\u201d, said Miguel Naranjo, program officer for the UN Framework Convention Goals. The annual IMEX\u00adEIC Innovation in Sustainability Award has been generating great interest and is highly effective in encouraging the industry to create and celebrate new initiatives.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-2-21.jpg\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-38134\" src=\"https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-2-21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-2-21.jpg 800w, https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-2-21-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-2-21-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-2-21-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-2-21-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-2-21-696x522.jpg 696w, https://www.seebtm.com/wp-content/uploads/foto-2-21-560x420.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" /></a></p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>More focus on mental health</strong> </span></p>\n<p>According to the Institute of Health Metrics Evaluation\u2019s Global Burden of Disease, about 13 % of the global population \u2013 some 971 million people \u2013 suffer from some kind of mental disorder. According to Arianna Huffington of Thrive Global, 300 million people suffer from depression, making it \u02bathe world\u2019s leading cause of disability.\u02ba Millions more now suffer from anxiety, stress or dementia. The big change is first that the historic stigma attached to admitting to mental illness is being removed with so many campaigns that say \u02baIt\u2019s OK not to be OK\u02ba. And second, there is more action, not only to provide greater help but also to reduce root causes. There are now many apps to help with everything from wellness to sleep quality and many employers have trained mental health first aiders who can identify and help staff. More employers are also taking steps to minimise the causes of stress and anxiety at work by, for instance, providing flexible working hours and places where staff can find peace and quiet away from their desks.</p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>AI can make travelling a more pleasant and less stressful experience</strong> </span></p>\n<p>It\u2019s no surprise that according to research from the University of Montreal commutes of 20 minutes or more can lead to chronic stress and burnout. So it\u2019s great to find that real\u00adtime emotion detection and artificial intelligence (AI) are being used to combat stress and bring a sense of wellbeing and calm to travel environments.First, across the Stockholm metro system, for two weeks this year, advertising space provider Clear Channel Sweden created<br />\nthe Emotional Art Gallery to help calm travellers. It synthesised real\u00adtime, publicly available data from Google searches, social media, news articles and traffic information to determine the mood of the city. The data was used to select and display artwork meant to combat commuter stress and anxiety across 250 of Clear Channel\u2019s connected screens. Six artists contributed to the exhibition, with bespoke pieces created to induce feelings of energy, love, peacefulness, calm, happiness, comfort and safety. Emotion detection robots can be deployed for the benefit of travellers in airports as well. Istanbul New Airport is to use them to improve travellers\u2019 experiences. Nely, a social robot from Turkey\u00adbased Human Age Technology, can provide information to travellers about traffic, gates and weather forecasts all while reading users\u2019 emotions and reacting accordingly. At the CES exhibition in January 2019 Automotive company Kia showed its Real\u00adtime Emotion Adaptive Driving (R.E.A.D.) system designed to reduce stress levels. The system monitors the driver\u2019s emotions using bio-\u00adsignal recognition technology.             "content_html": "<h1>The IMEX Group today announced that the theme of its fourth Talking Point will address the power and importance of \u2018NATURE\u2019 and will include IMEX\u2019s largest ever research study.</h1>\n<p>The Talking Point will also last for two years instead of one to underscore the topic\u2019s urgency and importance for the global business events industry.\u00a0In 2020 and 2021, IMEX will be working with its community and partners worldwide to bring the topic of \u2018NATURE\u2019 to life in ways that drive its mission of uniting and advancing the global business events industry. The Talking Point will be framed \u201c<em>Nature: What we can do for nature and what nature can do for us</em>\u201d in recognition that our relationship with nature shouldn\u2019t be taken for granted.</p>\n<p><strong>IMEX\u2019s largest ever research project</strong></p>\n<p>IMEX also announced that Marriott International will be the exclusive supporter of IMEX\u2019s NATURE research. The global hotel company will provide full backing of a series of industry research studies over the next two years. Through Marriott\u2019s support, IMEX plans to offer the research findings free of charge to industry professionals and supplement the content at IMEX in Frankfurt and IMEX America with education, activations and a range of curated experiences.</p>\n<p>Leading the research effort will be Guy Bigwood, Managing Director of the Global Destination Sustainability Index. Bigwood\u2019s team will produce three extensive and detailed pieces of research aimed at providing tangible insights to planners, providing both inspiration and the hands-on resources they need to be more sustainable, as well as strategic direction to directors and the C-suite.</p>\n<p>At the same time, IMEX will also be promoting a strong, positive message about the value and importance of urban and built environments as well as natural landscapes and habitats, under the banner \u2018Magical Places &amp; Spaces.\u2019 In addition, IMEX exhibitors and speakers will be sharing stories and case studies that exemplify biophilia (our innate human connection to nature) and biomimicry (design based on biological principles).</p>\n<p>The first report, due out at IMEX in Frankfurt in May, will introduce and examine the principles of the circular economy. \u00a0In phase two well-known academic and industry research partner, Janet Sperstad, CMP at Madison College, will present practical insights based on \u201cNature \u2013 An ecosystem for event success\u201d.</p>\n<p><strong>A rallying cry to save the planet</strong></p>\n<p>As Carina Bauer, CEO of the IMEX Group, explains: \u201cIn choosing \u2018Nature\u2019 as our Talking Point we\u2019ve taken a big, bold step. In July 2018, for example, the company phased out the automatic offering of plastic straws in all of its hotels across its brands including The Ritz-Carlton, Westin, Moxy and Courtyard by Marriott. And last August, the company launched a worldwide initiative across all brands aimed at phasing out the use of tiny, single-use toiletry bottles in guestroom showers and replacing them with larger-sized bottles that can distribute more product and be easily recycled \u2013 a move that, once completed, would eliminate 30 percent of plastic sent to landfills annually.</p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the growing importance of sustainability for our industry, customers and the communities we all engage with, we are thrilled to be supporting IMEX\u2019s important research for the global business events industry,\u201d said Tammy Routh, SVP of Global Sales, Marriott International. \u201cIt comes as our company deepens its commitment to our sustainability goals, such as reducing landfill waste by 45 percent by 2025.
