Meetings \u2013 in offices, conference rooms, or coffee shops. We\u2019ve all done that. But have you ever tried walking meetings? In the company building, outdoors, or in another surroundings?

In mid-2015, SEEbtm conducted a study about holding meetings outside the office, while taking a walk \u2013 the so-called walking meetings \u2013 among companies in the South East European region.

\n

Walking meetings \u2013 PROS

\n

According to the study, 66.7% of those who were interviewed reported that they have never tried this kind of meetings. However, out of all survey respondents who have tried this form of meetings, 33.3% of them gave positive feedback.

They believe that meetings held outdoors contribute to feeling relaxed and better mood and communication during the meeting, in addition to being more dynamic in comparison with the typical static setting.

They assert that they feel much more pleasant and free, and that everything on the agenda gets done considerably faster and has much higher quality. There are no redundant monologues or dialogues coming from comfy armchairs.

Still, for these meetings to be successful, they have to be specific and concise. As one fault, the people who have tried these meetings cite the difficulties in taking notes and the observation that some participants have troubles with following entire conversations or lectures when they are outside their standard environment.

\n

They also note that it is not always simple to get all of the participants interested in walking during the seminar.

\n

As for those who have never tried this form of meetings, 52% would like to try them out, while the rest gave the opposite response, mainly because they believe that these meetings are doomed to be of poor quality and that this is something that management decides on.

Likewise, we also took notice that company employees who have never attended such meetings would be quite willing to give them a try, while employees working in the hotel sector (hotels or agencies) would be less open to this.

An interesting fact is that out of those who have never tried walking meetings, as much as 58% have never tried them because the idea never even entered their mind. Thirty percent of the interviewed pointed out that they would try them now that they got an idea that they would like to implement.

Walking meetings \u2013 CONS

\n

The study found that 24% of respondents cited the extra amount of time that such meetings would take, and they believe that it would be impossible for them to be efficient in this way. They also mentioned inadequate space and location of their offices as some of the reasons against this type of meetings.

Being misunderstood and disapproval by their superiors were cites as some of the reasons by 10% of the polled, while 8% of them think that this form of meetings seems too personal, and therefore inappropriate, so they would not want to mix business and pleasure.

Exercise outside office hours and/or at the company

\n

Out of all survey respondents, 20% of them do not practice any form of physical activities. Others (80%), who stated that they do exercise, but mainly outside office hours, most frequently specified workouts and gym sessions, followed by pilates, yoga, swimming, running, power walking, walking, mountaineering, tennis, and cycling.

\n

A positive surprise is the high percentage of those who mentioned that they do undertake some form of exercise.

\n

Some of the mentioned company activities are company-organised team buildings, field trips, and spa weekends. However, very few respondents (25%) specified that their company makes the effort to organise such activities for their employees.

If you\u2019re wondering what activities you should introduce for your employees, the best you can do is ask them. We have, and here\u2019s what employees at regional companies told us.

Most survey respondents had positive reactions to the possibility of introducing recreational activities at companies where they work. The respondents even feel that it is necessary for companies to give as much attention as possible to organising and designing additional activities for employees.

The successful operations of most businesses depend upon good teamwork, so the challenge for management is to build teams that work well together and to motivate employees to achieve success together. In fact, high-performing organisations and businesses are basically about people working well together, and therefore effective team building should be a priority for anyone looking to achieve success in any business of any kind.

\n

The history of organised team building dates back to the late 1920s and early 1930s, with the publication of the classic Hawthorne Studies (1927-1932) that investigated what happens to a group of workers and employees under various conditions. In a 1933 issue of The Economist, Elton Mayo, one of the first researchers in team building emphasized that the most significant results of this management technique were the building of a sense of group identity; a feeling of social support and cohesion.\"Team

\n

However, it is generally agreed that from the early 1960s and up until the early 1980s, the prevailing work culture tended not to be so supportive of teamwork, as in that era the efforts of individuals were rewarded more often than those of groups in the workplace. But by the mid- to late-1980s there was a boom in the use of team building events for purposes of corporate development, as its effectiveness was increasingly recognized by human resources professionals.

\n

Nevertheless, it is certainly true that certain forms of team building in those years occasionally suffered from press criticism, due to the over-emphasis on adrenalin-producing activities such as walking on hot stones and paintballing. It was often claimed that such pursuits were not real team building activities in the pure sense, as they only emphasized who was the best and who was the worst within a team.

\n

As our understanding of the role of team building grew, it became clear that the true purpose of team building is to motivate; identify the strengths of team members; improve team productivity and communication; make the workplace more enjoyable; and help participants to learn more about themselves.

\n

In the 21st century, the extent of the use of team building by companies has tended to follow the state of the economy in general \u2013 being extensively used in prosperous years, and less used in times of financial crisis. Recently, the Conworld Global Meetings Industry Portal for 2011 (www.conworld.net) suggests that there has been a resurgence in demand for team building events but that clients increasingly want unique programmes within tight budgets. Something \u201cdifferent\u201d, that provides value-for-money is what most companies are now seeking.

\n

\"TeamThe most common activities and exercises for team building are for instance: communication, problem solving, decision-making, planning/adaptability exercises and trust exercises. Conworld also suggests that activities such as culinary events or activities based on Reality TV programmes are currently more popular. Activities based on popular culture (for example, the Da Vinci Trail or James Bond-related games) are also gaining in popularity, because they create a feeling of excitement and a sense of challenge among participants. One of the events organizers I interviewed for my research said: \u201cThe most popular are Treasure Hunts because they are affordable, low-budget product, effective, with lots of key skills and classically very entertaining.\u201d

Another new trend discovered in my research is that of combining corporate social responsibility with team building activities. Many employees are being sent by companies to countries such as South Africa, Nepal or Cambodia to work together on CSR projects, achieving teamwork, trust and cooperation. Such team building activities provide the opportunity to promote socially responsible attitudes to corporate life and life in general, and they are a clear indication that the team building events industry has reached a new stage of maturity.

Activities based on popular culture (for example, the Da Vinci Trail or James Bond-related games) are also gaining in popularity, because they create a feeling of excitement and a sense of challenge among participants.
