The reason is simple – because it is hard and one’s mind gives in. Therefore, for companies to innovate it is necessary for employees to understand their own brain (regardless whether it is top management or talents).

We (even as managers) are not designed for innovation. Our mind makes mistakes and it resists focusing on questioning, redefining and creating. But the good thing is that our mind can be tricked once you understand the principles behind it. The key is to understand ambidexterity at the level of an individual. There it refers to one’s ability to balance convergent and divergent thinking. With convergent thinking we make choices, while with divergent thinking we create choices. Different choices and problems require different types of thinking. The process that allows us to shift (or balance) between these two types of thinking is, what prof. Laureiro Martinez from ETH Zurich named “cognitive flexibility”.

When faced with problems, we can flexibly change our way of thinking or our point of view. It gives us the ability to break conventional rules of thinking, adopt new strategies or build novel combinations of stored knowledge. Convergent thinking is related to exploitation while divergent can be associated to exploration capabilities. In business context, exploitation refers to optimization and usage of existing business capacities, while exploration refers to creation of new value that lies in opportunities both inside and outside the company. The issue is that problems, tasks and decisions related with exploration on one side, and exploitation on the other, are not the same. Whether it`s about exploration or exploitation, key is to adapt our thinking processes by identifying problem components and reflecting upon them.

For individuals, focusing on exploitation is never a problem – as it is our “natural” mode of thinking.
Why companies, although led by the idea that “the only constant is change”, still fail to strategically pursue innovation?

On the other hand, exploration should focus on a structured approach to identifying and challenging underlying principles, which in return require significant brain resources (as it is “unnatural”). Each type of thinking, has its challenges but switching between them with recognition and reflection on the right timing to switch, allows us to embrace all the potential of ambidexterity and the opportunity for a company to strategically pursue innovation.
For more information visit: www.innovation-institute.eu
The post Ambidexterity – Equally Important for Individuals as It Is for Companies appeared first on SEE Business travel & meetings magazine.

The streaming technology is much older than we think it is. Back in 1920, the first streaming platform – Muzak – was used with similar audio systems for continuous music playback, long before computers were even invented. But today live broadcast is primarily associated with Internet use.

Livestream represents a technology that transmits live content to users via smartphones or computers on the Internet, and the most common formats are audio or video. The thing that is specific to streaming itself is that data is transmitted continuously, which allows the end user to immediately start to listen and/or watch the content in real time. The first live stream in the world came from a garage band called Severe Tire Damage back in 1993. They actually live-streamed of their Xerox PARC performance over the Internet. The first live-streamed baseball game came two years later, on the Real Networks website. However, the first continuous regular streaming is attributed to World magazine, which officially launched the service in 1995, the widely accepted milestone. This magazine was the first to play music online, although not live (-streamed), but instead pre-recorded. This first attempt focused on audio because it does not require so much technical stuff like video does, which was solved by enabling faster connection speeds. Streaming radio is actually a pioneer in the commercial streaming arena.

However, before that, video streaming also saw its first steps in the 1990s. The first video broadcast (stream) took place in 1996 – the Tibetan Freedom event. Even US President Bill Clinton used it for events that were taking place in municipalities. Shortly thereafter, when YouTube was launched in 2005, streaming became particularly popular.

Today the term live streaming is often used in the wrong context. The best example of this is using YouTube or Netflix, as well as many other commercial streaming sources, which actually represent on-demand streaming. Here users can listen or watch content they pick on their own, while live streaming is possible only at one particular moment, in real time, as the event is happening. In this regard, live streaming is possible only if there are video cameras and microphones at the event.

This technology is nowadays widely used in planning myriad events. You must have found yourself some time in a situation where you wanted to go to a concert, but the tickets were sold out; you needed to attend an important meeting, but it was taking place on another
continent; you were invited to be a speaker on a panel, but you could not get out of work because you had too many things to do. All this is solvable today thanks to the option of live streaming.

A number of event planners turned to this simple and accessible tool in modern-day communication. The reasons are manifold: the event is more appealing because the audience is bigger, it does not require physical presence, and it can be viewed on any smart device (we all have at least one of those ) or computer. All you need is an internet connection!

As already mentioned, live streaming, of course, requires video cameras. The new-generation video cameras, the so-called 360 video cameras, allow you to literally be in virtual reality. What distinguishes them from other, older models is the fact that you can see everything that is happening or being done or spoken at the event and feel like you are really there and present. They are placed in the room where the event takes place, and the cameras mounted on all four sides allow the viewers to literally walk around the room and the look around as if they were present, turning their heads to the left or right, up or down. You have to admit this is quite impressive…

If the cameras are placed in the best possible corner that is available at the time, the viewers have a better overview of the entire event. This means that they actually see as
much as you allow them. Ideally, this would be the spot with the best view and where all the action takes place. Sometimes this can be the middle of the room, but if your event has several segments that run simultaneously, you can set up a number of cameras that would transmit what is happening in each individual segment. However, if you do have the funds this can most certainly serve as a great opportunity for event managers to push the envelope when it comes to event planning.
On the other side, the development of technology brought about some light options that are available today – cheaper ways to watch an event, listen to a speech, or feel the mood in real time, so we have to mention here Facebook’s relatively new LIVE feature. This feature enables you to use the camera on your smartphone to live-stream conferences, promotions, and the like, the mood or key moments at an event.

Founders Fight club conference, live stage conference on exhibition Cebit 2017 in Hannover Messe, Germany

Other cheaper livestreaming option is Instagram Live video that is released at the end of November last year. Personalisation – is this just the start?

CocaCola and Starbucks have already been using it, and McDonalds and British Airways have recently indicated that it is going to be part of their strategy: personalisation, described in December 2015 by leading UK marketing title The Drum as “one of the hottest topics in the marketing industry today. Consumers today are living seamlessly across different devices and platforms and today expect a highly personalised experience from brands.”
In 2015, Gartner indicated that personalisation will continue upwards and reach its plateau in two to five years. This suggests that this flurry of activity is just a prelude to what may develop next year and beyond.

People like to be treated as individuals and like to be able to tailor how they are treated whether as an employee or as a consumer. Similarly IMEX has extended the options and flexibility of its hosted buyer programme to allow buyers more opportunities to tailor their experience at the show to fulfil their personal needs and interests.

Trends by IMEX for 2016

1. Personalisation

2. Digital marketing expert Mark Goddard in Forbes magazine says that in 2016, personalisation “will rely heavily on data integration and customer segmentation.” Also in Forbes magazine’s marketing predictions for 2016, Fintech expert Kevin Brown says: “Marketing and Data Science will be the new Dynamic Duo.”

3.
[quote_box_center]What will be the trends and buzzwords in the world of business, in the meetings industry and in our lives in 2016? Here are six ideas and trends identified by the IMEX team that are likely to be more evident and influential next year.[/quote_box_center]
2. Data and analytics
3. Being human
4. Shared economy
5. Community
6. Asia – potentially the key growth area
2. Data and analytics – underpinning new marketing strategies
Data gathering and analytics that drill down into the behavior of the individual and groups are essential to personalisation strategies so, as a corollary of the growth of personalisation, there will be an increased focus on these elements.
3. Being human
The continuing growth of the meetings and conference industry in an era when Skype and video conferencing are established reflects the essential importance and need for face to face contact.
Similarly, in contrast to the data driven approach, marketing expert Alan Hart, founder of marketing consultancy avidimpact.com predicts that “Being Human will return to marketing” because ‘consumers want to be inspired and have meaningful and personal connections with brands to move them to buy products and services.’

4. Shared economy – from consumer travel to the meetings industry
PwC predicts that the shared economy globally will grow from a value of $15bn in 2013 to $335bn in 2025. Within the travel sector, from Airbnb to Uber, from Bookalokal to Vizeat, the concept has made enormous inroads among consumers.
Next year will see the meetings industry discussing more intensively and proactively how it can and should adapt to this trend and use it co-operatively, with first steps to put words into action being seen.
5. Community – giving back
In an age when spare time is supposedly under pressure, the drive to contribute and give back, whether it is through volunteering or through schemes such as The Meetings Industry Fund, is a growing trend.
In 2013, one in four adults in the USA (25.4 percent) volunteered through an organization. Altogether, 62.6 million Americans volunteered nearly 7.7 billion hours last year.
Based on the Independent Sector’s estimate of the average value of a volunteer hour, the estimated value of this volunteer service is nearly $173 billion.
According to the UK’s annual Community Life Survey, in 2014-15 “there was a significant increase in the proportion of people taking part in civic participation at least once a month (5%) compared to 2013-14 (3%)”.
It also reports that in 2014-15, 8% of people participated in employer volunteering, a significant increase compared to 2012-13 (6%). While there seems to be an emphasis in society on ‘looking after yourself’, it is good to see altruism also increasing as well.
At IMEX in Frankfurt 2016, a new education track on the topic of shared economy will run throughout the show.
6. Asia – potentially the key growth area for new meetings destinations and venues.
The importance of this region is endorsed by the latest annual American Express meetings and events industry report which says that ‘meetings spending is rising globally, led by the Asia Pacific region with 2.1 per cent growth expected.’
In the 2012 IMEX Power of 10 study – looking at what the next decade holds for the meetings industry – 46% of respondents anticipated growing political and economic influence coming from Asia.
This was evident at IMEX in Frankfurt 2015 where stand space taken by countries from the Asia Pacific region expanded by 16 percent. Hosted buyer participation from the region has also increased significantly over the past 3 years.
The post IMEX highlights trends to note in 2016 appeared first on SEE Business travel & meetings magazine.",

Event managers should be familiar with the latest technology, in order to organize events that are trendy and managed to meet and exceed the growing expectations of the participants. Here are some key technologies and trends for the future of events as the company envisions it, by the Ms. Cassandra Michael, Sales and Marketing Manager at Azavista.
1. Augmented Reality Supplier Sourcing
Various augmented reality headsets like Oculus Rift are being launched. The current focus is on gaming, but Azavista predicts that in the near future hotels will allow planners to view meeting and event facilities virtually, just from the comfort of their desk or home.
2. Setting up your venue interactively
Azavista presented Leap Motion, a device that allows you to control a computer in three dimensions
with your natural hand and finger movements.
Azavista predicts that this technology will be used side by side with AR head-sets and allow planners to create their meeting or event set-up in an interactive and virtual way.
3. The end of translation booths
Microsoft’s Skype Translator automatically translates your voice and video calls with real-time translation. It’s still in beta version and there is vast room for improvement, especially regarding the contextualization of conversations.
Nevertheless, according to Azavista, in the near future we might see this technology replacing translation booths. Delegates will be able to follow any presentation in any language just from their smartphones.
Self-driving Technology
4. Your future contingency plan for rain
A new kick starter campaign presented the Air Umbrella – a literally invisible umbrella which takes advantage of airflow and creates shelter from the rain. Look out, here comes Gen Y, The Millennials!

– More fluent in technology, this new generation is addicted to social media, is even more environmentally conscious than their predecessors–the Gen Xers, and has high expectations of connectivity, interactivity, and the ability to influence and engage in dialogue. They know how to seek out free Wi-Fi, and as they enter the workplace and start attending meetings, they expect Wi-Fi to always be free and fast!

2. Think Socialising rather than Networking

– Socialising at work used to be frowned upon, taking on somewhat negative connotations. But increasingly, socialising is seen as relationship-building and for meetings, conference venues encourage relaxed socialising by providing multi-use spaces for conferees to gather together. It turns out that conferees actually do talk business in these welcoming environments!

3. Switch up the Mood!

– Meeting rooms have seen radical makeovers in terms of design, colour and creative seating options of late. New developments in technology have allowed venues and organisers to instantly change the look and feel of a meeting room with user controllable LED mood lighting, high-tech furniture groupings and more.

4. Geofence Your Conference

– Important advances in GPS-based app technology enable planners and venues to now personalise a conferee’s welcome and offer other location-based alert notifications upon arrival. For example, a badge is printed when the delegate enters the geofence (think venue), with notification sent via the app to the badge printing location. Providing useful location information and navigation assistance, the geofence can notify attendees where they are on a map and give guidance on where they wish to go.

5. Conference Networking and Information Exchange

– Developments in app-based two-way communication means that with user permission, one’s smart phone can easily transmit contact information, social media profiles, specific meeting room access information, meal tracking, food preferences, and much more. Communication between attendees can be enhanced with notifications, pictures and other information about who is nearby.

Consider the value of automated demonstrations (videos, etc.) for exhibitor products that meeting groups can offer their sponsors as a marketing enhancement. Instant and targeted contact is king today; new technologies and applications that help foster participant engagement and social interaction will grow in popularity and usage.

6. The Sky’s the Limit…For Now!

– We have seen a dramatic rise in the use of drones in extreme sports — and now conference organisers are using this affordable technology to capture creative event photos and map out the venue for GPS integrated conferences. What will “tomorrow’s” technology bring to outpace the functionality of drones!

7. The Days of the Cable are Numbered

– Just when venues think their under-counter box of chargers is current and complete, technology moves on and we get closer to a single standard for wireless charging technology, after years of competing standards. Currently pushing for a single standard, QI Consortium boasts wireless charging points in 3,000 hotels.

With large scale furniture makers such as IKEA installing standardised wireless charging into tables and desks they sell, the writing is on the wall for meeting venues to incorporate wireless charging points into bar tops, meeting room tables and guestrooms.

They better do so this year, as 2015 is sizing up to be the year the hospitality industry finally took standardising wireless charging technology and its availability seriously!

8. Meet your Virtual Colleague

– There are times when its just not possible to get everybody in the same place at the same time. Conference venues understand this and are making the virtual attendee experience much better. How?

Venues are developing meeting rooms with multiple ceiling-mounted microphones, high-bandwidth connectivity and advanced software solutions to provide seamless integration into the meeting for virtual attendees, faculty and guest speakers. Additionally, there is an increase in clients wanting to capture video to send to another physical location, where a second group of participants are gathered.

9. Conference Venues Welcome Streetview Technology

– The trend toward part-time meeting planners who are NOT full-time professional planners but may be an executive assistant, marketing coordinator, human resource professional or department head, is on the increase.

Today’s meeting planner, therefore, expects and requires more from their venue partners, in terms of evaluating venues’ capabilities to support their meeting or event.

When a planner cannot conduct an in-person venue inspection, technology is fast evolving using the Google Street View concept to provide valuable virtual venue tours, multiple room images showing different meeting layouts and even property video footage.

10. Buying Your Meeting Online

– More and more clients are using the web as their primary tool for making purchasing decisions. One IACC venue recently reported 70% of all new business comes via online search activities and they expect that number to grow.

The venues that will be the most successful in capturing this business will have websites that serve not only as marketing brochures but as the primary tool for their clients to plan, book, purchase, and engage with them for their next meeting.

IACC is the only global professional association, which represents small to medium sized venues focused on meetings, training courses and conferences.
